	A multi-disciplinary experience strategist, designer, researcher and artist.
 
Kelly brings 10 years of work to advancing social impact innovation through the imagining of cultural futures and cultivating spaces of belonging.&#38;nbsp;She&#38;nbsp;applies design methodologies to research, strategy, art-making, entrepreneurship, and product development&#38;nbsp;in a variety of industries including arts and cultural production, humanities, social impact entrepreneurship, and innovation technology. Kelly has special interest in speculative design futures and emerging design research practices.&#38;nbsp;
	 She has led expereince strategy and design projects on creative economy recovery with the National Assembly of State Arts Agencies, worked with NASA on strategies to preserve the legacy of the International Space Station, and worked to launch the&#38;nbsp;Creative Vitality Summit.&#38;nbsp;Kelly sits on the board of the Civic Canopy, a civic and social innovation nonprofit in addition to her various&#38;nbsp;thought leadership engagements within the arts and culture field. She holds an MS in Strategic Design and Management from Parsons School of Design and a dual BA in Art History and Technology, Art and Media from the University of Colorado, Boulder.

In Common™ Studio is the continuation of the strategy implimentation of extensive design research on how a sense of belonging can be designed into community experience. In Common leverages belonging to shape stronger, future proofed communities by shaping spaces, places, and community networks through co-creation, inclusion, cultural solidarity, and empathy


	

	
	

	


	


	



	In Common™ Studio&#38;nbsp;is a protoype of the research project that leverages a series of guides, tools and workshops that leverage belonging to shape stronger, future proofed communities by shaping spaces, places, and community networks through co-creation, inclusion, cultural solidarity, and empathy.
The project develops a series of tools to facilitate co-created community interventions that can take on many forms. Tools, workshops and interventions leverage design research, strategy and creative practice to create ephemera, celebrations, activations and ultimately a measurement of belonging through co-creating with our partners

Project Summary:
Lonliness and division amongst Americans are record high. In asking how might we design and futureproof new 
	
community spaces, we learned that 2nd generation Millennial experience, and this is an audience of people aged 25-40 with immigrant parents,&#38;nbsp; haven’t been given a roadmap for what life looks like and are tasked with creating a new culture for themselves.Taking a strategic approach to creating a sense of belonging by designing community- the 2nd generation millenial experience is critical in informing spaces that navigate intentional belonging.

Problem Space:
We are living in divided and disconnected communities. Those same divided communities collectively share existential threats. If we can’t work together, we will not survive together. Below are statistics from our research that help substantiate the urgency and severity around the decline of a sense of communit belonging, with a focus on urban areas and the experiences of 2nd generation millennial Americans:


	


	- 56% of Americans are feeling less connectedto their community.
(Source: Airbnb Study, 2021)
- Loneliness is as important a risk factor forearly death as obesity and smoking.
(Source: New York Times, 2016)
- Nearly one-quarter of Americans are feelingloneliness or emptiness and the majority are feelingless connected to family and friends (53%), to theircommunities (56%) and to the world (59%).
(Source: Airbnb Study, 2021)
	-Nearly 70% of the country’s largest citiesare more racially and ethnically diverse thanthey were in 2010. And by 2050, 89% of theU.S. population is projected to live in urban areas.(Source: University of Michigan: U.S. Cities, September 2021)
- 2nd generation Americans make up 12% of thenation’s population. And by 2050, they areprojected to account for 18% of it.(Source: Pew Research Center: 2nd Generation Americans, February 2013)



Our team focused its efforts on the idea of Designing Belonging. We believe belonging exists on a spectrum, not a binary, that allows for a nuanced experience. Our research journey led us to focus on the 2nd generation millennial experience. This is an audience of people aged 25-4 with immigrant parents. They haven’t been given a roadmap for what life looks like and are tasked with creating a new culture for themselves. We’re taking a strategic approach to creating a sense of belonging by designing community-based spaces through the lens of 2nd generation Millennials - a group whose upbringin taught them how to navigate intentional belonging.

Summary

In the spring of 2021, the International Space Station partnered with the Parsons School of Design to explore novel and imaginative ways to measure the immeasurable— a theme associated with exploring the vastness and opportunity of space.Through this consultative engagement, Parsons studio team conducted a comprehensive analysis of the overall aerospace industry, messaging and positioning, and branding to hone an initial set of insights and recommendations for the International Space Station.

PrototypesInformed by extensive design research processes, the Parsons team developed a host of strategies that that helped NASA understand how to better position the International Space Station’s legacy within the LEO economy. The teams concluded that wonder connects our wonder and that it was important to approach different personas.&#38;nbsp;

Project Type/ DesignObjective/ To visualize the relationship of financial resources against time to understand its impact on holistic wellbeingRole/ Visual Design, Story Team/ Annyelica Diaz, Kelly Ernst
Wellness as a holistic experience that includes, but is not limited to: time with self, time with family, exercising, eating well and any/all activities that support the well being of an individual living in NYC.Visualizing a direct link between financial wellness and holistic wellness allowed us to understand the living experience of people with different incomes in NYC. This visualization explores the concept of wellness in a capitalist economy.Our process allowed us the creativity to explore the economization of time and consequently, how time economizes wellness. Visual mapping practices illustrate how individuals with added resources are afforded more time, which in turn affords them more wellness and wellbeing - time allows for the economization of wellness. We use factors such as minimum wage, cost of living and yearly income to analyze our findings and map our theory.
